Administrator College Program

All Staff Preparedness

Course Introduction:

Welcome to our course on effective leadership during crisis and recovery. Unlike almost everything else you’ll do as an administrator, crisis unfolds in a heartbeat and it doesn’t give you a second chance. Being prepared is essential. This course is a foundational step.

Decisions made in the first 10 minutes of a crisis determine the level of trust maintained between the school and parents. It influences the length of time and the efficacy of recovery. Solid preparation allows you to make the best of a terrible situation. Crisis can provide an opportunity for you to build a deeper sense of community with staff, students and parents or it can undermine stability and good will you’ve worked to establish. You’ve got this!

How the Course Works:

For everyone:

  1. Download the handout for each module so you can take notes as you watch the corresponding video.
  2. Take time to write your reflections and insights.
  3. Choose an action step you’ll take based on knowledge gained.
  4. Write a brief paragraph after you’ve completed each action step describing the outcome of that effort.  Not all action steps will work as planned, but the learning that comes from that is just as valuable as when things go as planned.  In crisis, flexibility and learning from outcomes is critical.
  5. When you’ve completed all segments, complete the certification review, which will entail listing the action steps you identified and outcomes for each as you attempted to take that action.  Earning your certificate is not dependent on action step outcomes being as hoped, but on recognizing what was learned from the process.

For those in college certification programs who have been assigned this course, depending on instructor preference, you may be assigned specific videos to view for each week and also may discuss this in small groups or do activities related to the topic.  Instructors may change the order to coincide with content already planned for particular weeks.

For those taking this course as individuals, we recommend you go through the segments in order.  We will work to connect you with others via Zoom for small group discussion and activities.  You might also choose to view the video and have a discussion on the questions posed with your field placement advisor.

Receiving CMI Certification:

For those in college cohorts, instructors may opt to review your action step outcomes or will have you submit those to CMI. Submission of outcomes are to be emailed directly to CMI at coursework@cmionline.org. That email is only for turning in course work and receiving the certificate.

We’re here for you! If you have questions along the way, please email us at info@cmionline.org.
